Michigan Opera House is Casting Extras
If you are interested in participating in becoming an extra and can attend the audition, contact me. That’s all it takes! One phone call (or an e-mail) and you could be on stage at the Detroit Opera House!
Please contact Elizabeth Anderson (elizabeth@motopera.org) to let us know you can attend the audition. Over the coming weeks, we will compile a list of those interested in each show. That list will be given to the director and assistant director prior to the audition. All you need to do is show up to the audition.
At the audition the director will explain the extra roles as they apply to the opera and choose those potential individuals they feel would fit the role (and the costume) the best.
In addition to an unforgettable experience, extras receive free parking, 2 complimentary tickets to a performance, 2 passes for guests to attend the final dress rehearsal and a one-time $60 stipend.
Be advised that you must to be available for ALL rehearsals and performances. When you contact us, please let us know of any conflicts you may have with the staging rehearsals.

This classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. Unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
ANNIE SULLIVAN
Helen’s teacher. She is a strong and vibrant woman who is determined to connect Helen to the world. Her challenging past is what drives her to push Helen to the brink. There is a crude vitality to her and she is undeterred by the Keller’s protection of their daughter Helen.
HELEN KELLER
A deaf, blind mute. She is trapped in her own world, unable to speak, hear, or see. She is almost not human as she has been blind and deaf since she was stricken with scarlet fever as a baby.
CAPTAIN ARTHUR KELLER
Helen’s father. A captain, he is stern, but devoted to his family. He struggles to connect to young Helen, but he is loving nonetheless.
KATE KELLER
Helen’s mother. She is tormented by Helen’s insurmountable disability. She seeks to please Helen in order to avoid the tantrums and to compensate for her extreme misfortune. She is a captain’s wife, completely devoted to her husband, but a fiercely devoted mother as well. She is determined to give Helen any chance she can get.
JAMES KELLER
Helen’s half-brother, the son of the captain. He is described as indolent. He sees Helen as mentally defective and believes it best she be put in an asylum.
AUNT EVE
Helen’s aunt. She is a talkative, opinionated woman who serves as the catalyst for the Kellers’ contact with the Perkins School for the Blind.
ANAGNOS
Annie’s counselor at the Perkins Institution for the Blind. A dear and kind man, he is very fond of Annie. He serves as a mentor and friend.
VINEY
A servant. She is cheerful and very loving towards the Keller children.

Based on the film “Some Like It Hot,” SUGAR chronicles the zany lives of two musicians, of the prohibition era, who witness a gang slaying. Forced to disguise themselves as women, they join an all-female orchestra, and the games begin! Memorable musical numbers include Penniless Bums, The Beauty That Drives Men Mad, We Could Be Close, Doin’ It for Sugar, What Do You Give (To a Man Who Has Everything?), Beautiful Through and Through and November Song. This show is both outrageous and touching.

Auditions Notes: Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move in for dancing. Bring dance shoes if you own them.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.
*Spats Palazzo – Spats is a tap dancing gangster that dances throughout the show. Tap dancing is not a necessary requirement for this role. We are looking for actors with the eagerness to learn the tap numbers in the show.
